Gantt chart

The project timeline: bars, dependencies, critical path, automatic rescheduling, baseline, milestones, absences and export.

The Gantt tab draws the project's work on a time axis. It needs the Gantt module. What lands on the axis is anything with dates: work items with a start or a due date, sprints, releases and milestones.

Read the chart

  • Zoom with Days, Weeks, Months or Quarters, the minus and plus buttons, Fit to screen and Today
  • Group by parent (a tree), sprint, assignee, status, type or epic; Expand all and Collapse all
  • Filter by assignee, type, status or sprint, or Hide finished
  • The table beside the bars can show start, end, duration in working days, progress, estimate and variance
  • Items without dates stand in the group Not scheduled, which Show unscheduled shows or hides; drag across an item's empty row to give it dates
  • A parent's bar comes from its sub-items; dragging it moves the whole branch

Changing dates

Drag a bar to move it and pull its edges to change start or end. With the keyboard: focus a bar, Space picks it up, the arrows move it, Shift pulls the end, Alt the start. Undo reverses the last move.

Dependencies

  1. Point at a bar and draw an arrow from the circle at its start or end.
  2. Click the bar it leads to.
  3. Click the arrow to change its kind or Lag in days, or Delete arrow.

Kinds: finish to start, start to start, finish to finish and start to finish. A dependency the dates do not keep is drawn red. Critical path highlights the items whose delay moves the project's end; other items show how much slack they have.

Automatic rescheduling

Automatic rescheduling decides what happens to the work that waits when you move a bar:

  • Never: nothing follows; a broken dependency turns red and you decide. Straighten the chain fixes it on request
  • Ask: the chart shows what would move and by how many days, and waits for your yes
  • Always: the chain follows at once

Baseline

Choose Capture the plan to keep today's dates as a baseline. Bars then show the promised plan underneath, and how many days later or earlier than promised each item is.

Milestones, working days and absences

  • Milestones are kept in the project's Releases tab (New milestone, with a name and a date) and drawn on the axis. Draw a line down the chart highlights one
  • Durations count working days. Holidays and sick leave of the assignee show on their rows

Export

Export offers MS Project (XML), Table (CSV) and Picture of the whole plan (PNG).
