Sprints and backlog

Plan sprints from the backlog, set capacity from a suggestion, start and complete sprints, read the burndown chart.

Sprints give a project a rhythm: a sprint starts, it ends, and unfinished work moves on. They need the Sprints module; a Scrum project always has it.

Plan

  1. Open the project, Sprints, view Planning.
  2. Choose New sprint. Give it a name (left empty, it takes the next number), a Sprint goal, Starts and Ends.
  3. Drag items from the Backlog into the sprint, or between sprints. You can also set the Sprint field on the item itself.

Each sprint shows how many items it holds, how much estimate is left and how many are unassigned.

Capacity and the suggested scope

  1. On the sprint, choose Propose to see what GoProject suggests, or Set the capacity to type a number of your own.
  2. The proposal is worked out from the people on the project, the working days of the sprint, their absences and the focus factor, and for points from the rate of recently closed sprints.
  3. Look through it line by line, then take the proposed value or type your own.

The sprint then reads Under capacity, Balanced or Over capacity. Moving an item into a full sprint asks first (Move anyway). Rows without an estimate are counted and flagged, because they add nothing to the plan yet.

Start and complete

  • Start runs the sprint. A sprint only starts in an active project; you are offered to activate the project
  • Complete ends it. If items are unfinished, you choose where they go: an upcoming sprint or the backlog; with no other sprint they return to the backlog

In Sprint settings the project can create the next sprint automatically, roll unfinished work over automatically, and complete a sprint automatically at its end time.

Several sprints at once

When Allow several sprints at once is on in the sprint settings, several teams can run their own sprints in one project at the same time. Otherwise one sprint runs at a time.

The report

Completed sprints are listed under Completed with a Report:

  • Burndown with the Ideal line, in points or in work items
  • Velocity over the last sprints
  • What happened during the sprint: at the start, added, removed, re-estimated and at the end
  • Finished and unfinished items, and what rolled over

On any dashboard that carries it, the My sprints widget shows the sprints you have work in and how much of it is yours.
